Eurasian Wryneck | Oliver Richter
«Every year I spend some time photographing the well-camouflaged Eurasian Wryneck. During the breeding season, it tirelessly feeds its young with ant larvae. My goal was to show the wryneck in its habitat and while foraging. An approaching storm added a dramatic effect. Before the rain came, the bird used its perfectly adapted tongue to collect more food for its young from the wayside, then flew off.»

White-tailed Sea-eagle | Bence Máté
«I was photographing White-tailed Eagles, superb predators not afraid of the below zero temperatures of the Hungarian winter. This eagle started calling, his fuming breath well visible against the backlighting, offering a beautiful set-up for a picture.»
Bence Máté,
Bence MÁTÉ (b. 1985) is a Hungarian wildlife photographer. At a young age, Bence spent most of his time in the nature, trying to figure out how he could take even more expressive pictures. He started collecting the pieces of his photo equipment step by step, meanwhile, the acknowledgement of his work began, he took part in Hungarian and international contests. With his innovative ideas and technical solutions he reforms the practice of bird photography. Following his techniques, the approach of taking action photos and capturing typical behaviour of birds, gains ground widely. In 2010 he is awarded with the “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” (Marvel of Ants), aka the Oscar of photography. Though, being awarded numerous times, he keeps finding new projects, builds hides for rent, shares his adventures in a book, presenting, and shooting a film on his work process. But foremost, Bence takes pictures of wildlife. Despite his still young age, by his dedicated work, he became Hungary’s most recognised and successful wildlife photographer by now.

Greater Flamingo | Jonathan Lhoir
«Hidden behind a thicket of tamarisk, I waited for the perfect moment to photograph the flamingos foraging in this lagoon in the Camargue. When all the right circumstances had come together, a nearby bird stepped into the picture so that only its legs appear in the photo.»

Avid photographer, Jonathan was born in Belgium and has lived to the north of Montpellier for many years. A naturalist above all else, Jonathan has worked on nature conservation projects and on science projects. As an experienced enthomologist, he is today re-exploring the insect world through photography and takes a lot of pleasure in developing this "contemplative entomology." Constantly evolving, he is gradually moving away from the "traditional" photographic approach to flourish in taking more personal shots that favour his imagination and creativity. Jonathan is now a professional photographer. Lecturer, jury member, exhibitor, author of several books and winner of international competitions, his photographs are now recognised on a European scale.

Common Cuckoo | Daniel Ottmann
«For several years now I have been observing and photographing Common Cuckoos and European Stonechats whenever I get the chance. This year I was able to observe the stonechat male defending its territory against the cuckoo. As soon as the cuckoo appeared, the stonechat immediately launched an attack.»
Daniel Ottmann, Germany
Since devoting myself to nature photography, my focus has been on birds. My goal is to capture authentic shots that show the birds in the best possible light. This approach often gives me fascinating insights into their behaviours, many of which are normally hidden to the human eye. Although I often travel abroad as a photographer, it is the long-term observation of birds found just outside my front door – like the cuckoo and the stonechat – that appeals most to me.

Northern Nutcracker | David Bertuleit
«The photo was taken in the «Eichhörnchenwald» (Squirrel Forest) near Fischen in Germany. The Spotted Nutcrackers in these woods evoke many beautiful memories of my childhood, so it seemed only natural for me to return here as a photographer. The nutcrackers show no fear of people, which to me makes this place a good example of humans and animals living together.»
David Bertuleit, Germany
My love for nature photography emerged from my great passion for ornithology. At some point in the pursuit of my hobby, the desire arose to hold onto these moments I experienced in nature. At first, I used a compact camera to take pictures through binoculars, until I was able to afford an SLR with money I received for my confirmation. Since then, I have continued to invest in camera equipment, and I have also become much better at creating the conditions for a great shot.

Western Capercaillie | Vianney Goma
«I had already spent three sleepless nights trying to photograph this Western Capercaillie on its favourite perch. It was not until the last day of my stay in Norway that it struck the pose I was hoping for. I intentionally kept my distance: For one thing, I didn’t want to disturb the bird. I also wanted to be level with it and to include the beautiful tree in the picture.»
Vianney Goma, France
I grew up in the country, surrounded by vineyards, overgrown fields, holm oak forests, dry grassland and quarries. Agricultural life has accompanied me since childhood. My parents were winegrowers, so I learnt to drive a tractor before learning how to use a camera. When I was 11, I became interested in birds. In 2006, I took my first steps in photography on weekends and during holidays. I am fascinated by pictures that capture the essence of their subject, where the animal and its surroundings have equal weight. Through my work, I try to increase people’s awareness for the beauty and diversity of nature as well as the importance of protecting it.

«At the edge of a fishing village on the Lofoten islands, a few Black-legged Kittiwake pairs were nesting on a black cliff face. I particularly liked the contrast between the birds and the colour of the rock. Generally, this species breeds in much larger colonies than was the case here.»

Yellow-billed Chough | Alessandra Meniconzi
««Kreea! kreea! kreea!» – the Alpine Chough’s shrieks were so loud and insistent that, with the dramatic clouds in the background, I felt for a moment like the ill-fated character in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie «Birds». Thanks to the strong storm wind around the Säntis (Switzerland) – I had difficulty standing upright – I was able to capture the birds’ impressive acrobatic flight skills.»
Alessandra Meniconzi,
My work centers on the ancient heritage, customs, spirituality, and daily life of indigenous people who are strongly connected to nature and whose traditional cultures are at risk of vanishing. I am motivated by a passion for the interplay between wild places and ancient cultures, as well as a fascination with and profound respect for native people who subsist in isolated regions of the world. I strive to portray the lives of indigenous people with authenticity, insight and sensitivity. Every now and again, however, I take a wildlife photo just for fun. The most important issue in wildlife photography is to understand the animal's behaviour and to be very patient. The second step is to have an understanding of the subject beyond its stereotype. I don’t want my images to become visual clichés, so I try to add my personal interpretation of the subject, keeping the images as simple as possible and paying attention to every detail.

«This picture was taken at the Creux-du-Van. It was the first time I had seen a Wallcreeper. I am very satisfied with the result, especially with the effect of the dark background. I wasn’t sure I had chosen the right settings, but the picture came out just right.»
Yann Staffelbach,
I have always been fascinated by nature. When I was little, my father and I would watch the animals that lived in our area, the Seeland. At the age of 10, I would set off into the woods with my telescope to watch birds, which was my greatest passion. One day, I came across a television programme called “The secrets of animal photography”. It was a revelation – this was what I wanted to do! Now, at 17 years old, I love to explore the magnificent places the Seeland has to offer with my camera. It’s a great excuse to spend even more time in this beautiful natural environment that we must protect and preserve…

Northern Long-eared Owl | Remo Savisaar
«Every spring and summer I watch Long-eared Owls. After a few weeks, I have usually earned their trust and they let me get very close. I watch their behaviour and know if they are alert or calm, and I approach only when they are calm. One evening I was watching this owl from very close up. At one point, the owl turned to look at the sky and a moving leaf. That was the moment I was waiting for!»

Northern Gannet | Robert Sommer
«The photo was taken on the German island of Helgoland. Northern Gannets breed close to the cliff edge, which is an excellent vantage point for observing their courtship displays. In the background, the North Sea shimmers in the sunlight. The challenge was to capture a single gannet pair, without other birds intruding into the picture. The pair in the photo appears to be on cloud nine.»

«The colony of Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the German island of Helgoland lends itself to some spectacular photography. During the breeding season, the opportunistic birds seize every chance that comes their way to obtain food. Even the unattended egg of a fellow colony member can serve to rear the young. The photo is a fascinating illustration of the interactions in the gull colony.»

«I was up at dawn on this May morning, and the forest was filled with bird song. One bird’s call stood out above the rest. It was a Eurasian Wren. Well visible and partially back-lit, it belted out its melodious tune while perched on a large branch. I had time to press the shutter button four times before the little forest elf disappeared back into the safety of the undergrowth.»
