Great White Egret | Mateusz Piesiak
«Every autumn thousands of birds of different species appear in Barycz Valley in Poland to eat fish and gain energy before winter. Great White Egrets and large flocks of Black-headed Gulls are a great opportunity to take interesting photos. I lengthened the exposure time to highlight the contrast between the din of the flying gulls and the stillness of a lone egret.»
Mateusz Piesiak, Poland
I am a wildlife photographer from Poland. Fascinated by nature, I have been documenting unique moments in animal life for over 10 years. Wildlife photography requires a lot of patience. Often, after many hours of waiting, animals just don’t show up and I come home without any photo. But when I finally take a long-awaited shot, it rewards all efforts.
In nature photography, I enjoy the feeling of being concealed in my hiding place, and like a visitor sitting in the front row of the theatre, I can admire the great spectacle of nature taking place just in front of me. It is a true honour to be able to witness these moments and share them with other people through my photographs.

Common Crane | Agnieszka Florczyk
«This photo was taken from under a camouflage net at a Crane roost on a foggy morning. In autumn, the Cranes often choose fish ponds for their night shelter. They are accompanied by herons and screaming flocks of gulls, which every now and then take flight, disturbed by White-tailed Eagles. Fish ponds are an easy source of food for all fish-eating birds.»
Agnieszka Florczyk,
Everything started with Cranes – these birds made an enormous impression on me a few years back and they still impress me today. The Crane – bird of hope and joy, bird of nature which has just awoken from the winter dream, but at the same time bird of autumn. A bird of the time when big flocks of Cranes gather together. I have great respect for nature, and take pictures of wild animals in their natural habitat only. While showing their life and behaviour, I try to be an invisible observer of this amazing world and not to disturb it’s eternal balance and harmony in any way.

Mute Swan | Nicolas Stettler
«Although Mute Swans tend to be quite trusting, the underwater housing initially raised some suspicion. But after countless mornings, the swans got used to it. As the water was icy cold, I could only hold the camera in the water with stiff fingers and was not able to look through the viewfinder. It was pure luck that the sunlight hit the camera at the right angle.»

I am 19 years old and from Switzerland. Having grown up in the Bernese Seeland, I now study biology at the University of Bern. I have been photographing for more than half my life. Today, my focus is mainly on waterbirds and other creatures of the lakes and rivers. I try to photograph the animals in different ways to provide new insights into their enthralling lives.

Eurasian Wryneck | Jörg Stemmler
«The Eurasian Wryneck is one of my favourite subjects because it almost always cuts a fine figure. It often sticks out its impressive tongue, but retracts it so quickly that by the time you press the shutter button, it is usually too late. In many hours of observation I gathered enough experience to read the birds’ behaviour and be ready at just the right moment.»
Jörg Stemmler,
My introduction to wildlife photography came 20 years ago when I started photographing birds. While birds remain one of my favourite subjects today, I have broadened my spectrum to include other animals – from lizards to grizzly bears. Almost all my photos are taken from a hide. I enjoy the entire process, from exploring a species’ way of life, to installing the hides and producing the image. Not disturbing the animals is very important to me. That is the only way to get shots that offer an authentic glimpse into an animal’s natural world. I present my pictures in lectures, publications and calendars.

White Stork | Matt Engelmann
«I captured this pair of storks nesting on an island using my super-telephoto lens. The effect was created by photographing with wide aperture through the still leafless waterside vegetation. I tried to take the picture through a gap in the branches, using the opening to direct the eye of the viewer to the storks.»
Matt Engelmann,
Photography is a never-ending journey of discovery for me and a continuing source of inspiration. The unpredictability of wildlife photography is my greatest challenge.
I like to explore the agricultural landscapes close to home, in places that at first seem unspectacular, but that over time reveal their particularities and details.
By waiting, watching and investigating I try to enter a sort of flow and feel thrilled to be able to experience special moments, certain behaviours or extraordinary light effects.
To take the picture of the White Storks, I returned to the same place on several occasions and was enchanted every time by the evening moods and the contrasting colours in nature.

Greater Flamingo | Jonathan Lhoir
«This picture taken in the Camargue shows a small group of flamingos at rest, illuminated by the last rays of sun. With the help of a slow shutter speed and an intentional movement of the camera, I transformed this rather ordinary scene into something offbeat.»
Jonathan Lhoir, France
An avid photographer, Jonathan was born in Belgium and has lived to the north of Montpellier for many years. A naturalist above all else, Jonathan has worked on nature conservation projects and on science projects. An experienced entomologist, he is today re-exploring the insect world through photography and takes a lot of pleasure in developing what he calls "contemplative entomology". Constantly evolving, he is gradually moving away from the "traditional" photographic approach in favour of more personal shots that draw on his imagination and creativity. Jonathan is now a professional photographer. Lecturer, jury member, exhibitor, author of several books and winner of international competitions, his photographs are now recognised on a European scale.

Dunlin | Levi Fitze
«During an autumn trip to the island and birding hotspot of Heligoland, I discovered a small group of Dunlins. As the wind picked up, sweeping the sand across the ground, I tried to position the birds against a dark background. The waders were struggling against the sand and kept stopping briefly with their eyes closed. »

Barn Swallow | Adrian Schmid
«A small lake had formed in a corn field after the torrential rain in the summer of 2021. Barn Swallows and House Martins took advantage of the flooded area for foraging, drinking and bathing. Armed with wellies and a camping chair, I sat in the water and took thousands of pictures. The corn in the background gave the water a green colour. I like this image in particular for its beautiful symmetry.»

Red-throated Loon | Erkko Badermann
«I have been following the Red-throated Loon’s mating season for five years. Birds return to their home pond in spring immediately after the ice melts. They go fishing on bigger lakes and arrive at their home pond every morning at sunrise for their mating dance. I have photographed their landings several times. The angle straight ahead and perfect timing make this photo special.»

Tawny Owl | László Tóth
«An uncovered well on the edge of the forest caused the death of this Tawny Owl. The bird probably detected movement and swooped down in the direction of the noise. Unfortunately, it was unable to take off again.»
László Tóth, Hungary
I breathed the love of nature in with the air that surrounded me as a kid in the rural fields and forests. I have always been interested in birds. Where I live, we researched the urban settlement of Long-eared Owls, placing artificial nests nearby for years in which the birds could successfully raise their chicks. I have started to build bird hides so that none of my pictures depend only on chance. I most love to capture the little moments that are barely noticeable to the ordinary bystander.
I enter some of my pictures in competitions, where the results I achieve encourage me to continue what I am doing, but no prize or position in a contest means as much to me as the wonder of experiencing dawn in nature!

Photography is my passion. I have been an avid photographer for more than 15 years, focusing on nature and macro photography. Being alone in nature in the pristine early morning is the best way to truly relax. But I find street and architectural photography interesting as well, because they offer an unbelievable variety of subjects. I hope that my pictures convey how fascinating photography is.

Born in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, I grew up sharing unforgettable moments in nature with my family, both in the mountains and near the ocean. This passion for the living world led me to study biology and ecology, a period that was filled with travel and encounters with the wild. Photography soon became an indispensable companion that allowed me to convey and express my unwavering love for nature and to share it with as many people as possible.
