Great Spotted Woodpecker | Jonathan Lhoir
«In autumn 2018, I had the chance to roam the forests bordering the Teide National Park in Tenerife. This forest belt, mainly composed of Canary Island pines, attracts many Great Spotted Woodpeckers in search of food and shelter. On this day, a thick fog lay in the pine forest. I took the opportunity to spend an hour with this bird, not at all shy and busy making a thorough inspection of every trunk in this part of the forest.»
Jonathan Lhoir,
Avid photographer, Jonathan was born in Belgium and has lived to the north of Montpellier for many years. A naturalist above all else, Jonathan has worked on nature conservation projects and on science projects. As an experienced enthomologist, he is today re-exploring the insect world through photography and takes a lot of pleasure in developing this "contemplative entomology." Constantly evolving, he is gradually moving away from the "traditional" photographic approach to flourish in taking more personal shots that favour his imagination and creativity. Jonathan is now a professional photographer. Lecturer, jury member, exhibitor, author of several books and winner of international competitions, his photographs are now recognised on a European scale.

Award winning photographer and author, Markus Varesvuo is a professional wildlife photographer specialized in birds of Europe, especially his native north. Based in Helsinki, and part-time on a small island in the Finnish Archipelago, perfectly located along a bird migration route, Markus enjoys creating enticing pictures of birds, especially in winter conditions.

Eurasian Nuthatch | Dario Ferrandi
«Val Roseg is one of my favorite places in autumn. In the morning I savour the first timid frosts. The sun reaches the woods later. It is the moment of the comings and goings of the tits, the acrobatics of the nuthatch and the squirrel, that incredibly agile jumper from one branch to the other. It is the closeness, the human-animal bond that brings me back here every year.»
Dario Ferrandi,
The shot that magically transfers the image from the mind to the film or to the sensor is only the top of a huge iceberg. The ingredients that allow to achieve a meaningful image are hidden but exciting: the choice of the place, the meticulous preparation of the equipment, the silent and awake walk, the correct setting of the camera.
My approach is reflective, fully in tune with the natural timings and rhythms, feeling astonished by the smallest shapes and details, instead of considering them insignificant and less worth depicting.
The gaze is attentive and continually looking for an unusual, lively, exciting framing. It is as if I grotesquely had a camera instead of my head, with a futuristic zoom that covers all the existing focal points. On the other hand I have to pay attention to avoid the surroundings to influence me. Smells, sounds, weather conditions, the emotion to be in front of a rare subject; these are all elements that don’t fit in the shot and don’t increase its compositional and expressive value. The image must immediately catch the eye, hit the heart and awaken the mind. I am convinced that the challenge, the difficulty, the fascination of photography consist in the ability to convey a complex message through a simple two-dimensional medium.

Rock Ptarmigan | Flurin Leugger
«In the snow-covered landscape, the Rock Ptarmigans in their winter plumage are almost perfectly camouflaged. A dream came true for me when I finally had the chance to photograph Rock Ptarmigans in winter. A slightly reduced magnification ratio highlights the camouflage: if it weren’t for the black beak and eye stripe, the Ptarmigan would blend perfectly into the white of the snow.»
Flurin Leugger,
Already as a child the birds fascinated me. Over time, my need to photographically document rare observations with a camera grew, and I discovered photography for myself. Meanwhile, nature photography is my great passion and I want to convey emotions with the pictures. The creative play with light and motifs is a welcome change or addition to the environmental science classes at ETH Zurich.

Mute Swan | Susanne Brunner
«When Mute Swans begin their courtship display in February, I am drawn again and again to the island of Werd near Stein am Rhein, where many swans gather. The thick fog that was present on this morning in February 2019 dispersed with the rising sun. I was able to observe the two swans’ stunning courtship display as they formed heart shapes with their necks, a magical performance that I found particularly beautiful in the diffuse light created by the fog.»
Susanne Brunner,
What could be nicer than being outside in the fresh air and in nature.... With nature photography I can take a little break from everyday life, recharge my batteries and finally show and bring the beauty of nature to others.
I find it particularly exciting to observe animals in their habitat. It is important to me not to disturb. For the sake of an animal, I can also do without a photo.

«Wrens are hard to photograph. However, since I had been following this individual for some time, I expected it to approach this stone on the water, as it had been doing for some time. I scrambled to take this picture as it was about to land there again.»

My name is Roelof Molenaar, photographer from the Netherlands. Started by photographing landscapes but changes towards photographing birds. What I like the most is photographing 'birds in action'. Most photographs I take close to my home. Due to this it is easy to come back at the same place and to spend more time on one subject.

Northern Nutcracker | Alwin Hardenbol
«Three Spotted Nutcrackers, two of them vying for a seat on the branche, with the third a shocked onlooker. This image was taken in the mountains near Sofia in Bulgaria. By overexposing the image in-camera, I managed to make the snowy background appear as a white canvas on which the birds look like they have been drawn.»
Alwin Hardenbol,
At the age of 13 my passion for nature began when I got into birdwatching through an uncle of mine. Two years later I received a DSLR camera with a lens as a gift from my family since I seemed to be very interested in photographing birds. Right they were, as many years later, this passion has developed into something much bigger. Now at the age of 26 I am a photographer that specialises in fine-art images of nature and I am actually also doing my PhD in forest ecology in which I focus on nature conservation issues in boreal old-growth forests.

Great Crested Grebe | Patrick Donini
«In spring, Great Crested Grebes defend their territories and offer interesting opportunities for action photography. The grebe in this picture was chased away by a rival, its flight producing a remarkable bow wave.»
Patrick Donini,
For almost 30 years I have been engaged in the photography of wild animals, originally still analogue and for 12 years in digital form. My primary concern is to capture the beauty of nature, so that the special encounters with fascinating creatures do not just leave a fleeting, fading memory behind. Many people are not even aware of what you can see in your own garden or in the forest right behind your own house! I find raptors and owls particularly fascinating.

«In summer, tens of thousands of guillemots gather on the island of Hornøya in Norway. This Common Murre settled in a spot where its white belly merged with the background, creating an interesting composition and contrast.»
Marius Mosimann,
My interest in birds began early because my father often took me on his ornithological excursions. At some point I wanted to capture my observations photographically and bought myself a camera. Today I photograph with great enthusiasm, especially during our family holidays, which often take us to bird hotspots.

«Night had already fallen, and I was wrapping up a photo outing in Brittany when I heard the sound of a European Robin. The full moon in the background lit up the trees so that I could make out the singer in the darkness. The bird was very still as I took several pictures against the light.»
Ugo Di Capua,
For two years now, I have been exploring Brittany’s nature in search of animal encounters, always with the same passion. I particularly enjoy photographing passerines near my home, because they are common and often not very shy. It is easier to photograph them. I also take great pleasure in observing their incredible attitudes, from morning until the latest hours.

I am 16 years old and have been photographing for about 4 years. I live in the Bernese Seeland and go to high school in Biel. Especially in winter you can still find a relatively high diversity in Seeland. The many water birds that spend the winter or breed here are especially appealing to me.
