Black-tailed Godwit | Karsten Mosebach
«The sight of this bird in the monotonous expanse of grey-brown farmland is as fascinating as it is unusual. At the same time, the image achieves a stunning visual effect. I have no idea what caused the Black-tailed Godwit to visit the field, where food is scarce....»
Karsten Mosebach, Deutschland
Ever since accompanying a friend on a photo shoot some 30 years ago, I can think of nothing more exciting than being out and about with my camera. I take every chance I get to be outdoors, taking pictures in nature. I especially enjoy spending prolonged periods of time observing and photographing a single species.

Eurasian Whimbrel | Ari Tervo
«In a big swamp in the village of Suomussalmi in Finland, the setting sun provided just the kind of light I was waiting for. I wanted to shoot birds against the sun. A Whimbrel flew over the swamp and landed in exactly the right spot for me to take my shot. The light shone through the bird’s wings and the cotton-grass glowed like candles.»
Ari Tervo, Finland
All my holidays and weekends are spent taking pictures. Most of the time I take photos of birds, but I also photograph mammals and the northern lights in winter. At least three times a year, I travel abroad. My favourite countries for bird photography are Israel, Estonia and Norway. I live in central Finland, where there are few migratory birds, so I focus on the birds in our area, like owls. I love to capture birds in action – it is harder, but extremely rewarding when you succeed.

Common Eider | Thomas Hinsche
«It can be difficult to get great shots of certain animals because of their long flight distance. But on Heligoland, where space is limited, unexpected encounters can occur. With its feathers fanned out by the wind blowing from behind, this magnificent Eider drake has a somewhat clumsy appearance, but it makes a stunning motif all the same.»
Thomas Hinsche, Deutschland
I grew up in a family of ornithologists, receiving guidance from my father and grandfather and learning at a young age to appreciate undisturbed natural habitats. I took up nature photography in 2006. Since then, I have been capturing my experience in pictures, developing my skills and my passion for nature photography while practicing patience, respect and care towards the animals. I see my images as a means to draw people’s attention to the beauty in their surroundings and arouse their curiosity.

Western Jackdaw | Jonathan Lhoir
«This photo was taken last winter in a small town in southern France. Every evening, a flock of Jackdaws gathered to roost in the sycamore trees on a square in the town centre. I wanted to capture the bleakness of this twilight spectacle, so I chose a wide angle to include as many trees as possible.»

An avid photographer, Jonathan was born in Belgium and has lived to the north of Montpellier for many years. A naturalist first and foremost, Jonathan has worked on nature conservation projects as well as science projects. As an experienced entomologist, he is today re-exploring the insect world through photography and takes a lot of pleasure in developing this "contemplative entomology". Constantly evolving, he is gradually moving away from the "traditional" photographic approach and taking more personal shots that engage his imagination and creativity. Jonathan is now a professional photographer. Through his activities as a lecturer, jury member, exhibitor, author of several books and winner of international competitions, his work has gained recognition throughout Europe.

Whooper Swan | Antti Siponen
«The lake is still in the grip of winter. But the Whooper Swans sense the coming of spring and accompany their courtship displays with trumpeting calls and ritualised movements. I managed to capture these at just the right moment in a perfectly symmetrical image.»

I am an enthusiastic wildlife photographer from Finland. I like to capture special light effects and moods of nature, and especially appreciate calm and foggy mornings. Mostly I photograph birds, but I am interested in all nature-related topics. My favourite places for photography are near water, so I have developed a preference for water birds, cranes and herons.

Carrion/Hooded Crow | Katharina Becker
«Intelligent and highly adaptable, crows are fast learners. In Berlin, they take advantage of the artificial light to continue their search for food after nightfall. This image is part of a series on winter crows in Berlin. The Hooded Crow was perched on a fence near the Berlin Christmas market. I captured the bird's silhouette against the Christmas lights in the background.»
Katharina Becker, Germany
Born and raised in the hills of the Weser Uplands, I have always enjoyed being out in nature, a passion that led me to study biology in Berlin. Photography is my second love. Besides macro and experimental photography, I take a special interest in nature in the urban environment of Berlin. By making the character and behaviour of animals in the city visible, I hope to draw attention to the wildlife that surrounds us.

«The nests of Great Crested Grebe and Horned Grebe were located a few metres apart close to my floating hide. The birds did not usually pay much attention to each other. Although I graduated in zoology, I have only started to express my passion for animals and nature via photography in the last couple of years. I have always been fascinated by birds and their freedom as well as by art. Therefore, I try to capture the motion of birds and my own feelings by using various techniques to create photos that resemble paintings. It is fascinating what you can achieve with long exposure - it is like a painter using his brush.

I was born in 1974 in Parma (Italy), where I still live today. I am the LIPU delegate for the province of Parma. Together with other LIPU volunteers, I have monitored one of the most important colonies of Red-footed Falcons for at least 15 years. But my main interest is in the Golden Eagles of the Apennine mountains. In fact, photographing raptors is my passion, though I also enjoy taking pictures of passerines in the gardens of my friends.

«Reed Buntings have repeatedly been observed on this stretch of the river Limmat during the winter months. This shot of a bird feeding on the reeds was taken in December. I started to take an interest in ornithology three years ago. The desire soon arose to capture my observations in images, so I taught myself photography using an old camera that belonged to my parents. As my standards for quality rose, I acquired a new camera that I now use at home and on trips abroad.
