Common Starling | Daniel Biber
«In the northeast of Spain, hundreds of thousands of Common Starlings gather at nighttime to sleep. While I was watching this spectacle, the billowing flock suddenly took the shape of a huge flying bird. What luck!»
Daniel Biber,
I started taking pictures in the early eighties using analogue formats such as slide and black-and-white film, focussing mainly on landscape photography. It was not until my transition to digital in 2008 that I became more interested in animal photography, and birds in particular. I have always stayed true to my analogue roots, by the way – a good picture should be created while taking the shot, and not afterwards at the computer. That is why I keep image processing to a minimum. My photos have gained recognition in national and international competitions.

European Robin | Folkert Christoffers
«I photographed this European Robin while walking in the woods. The scene appealed to me because the colours of the bird’s plumage harmonise so well with the foliage, the moss and the mushrooms.»
Folkert Christoffers,
I was born on 3 January 1962 in Aurich/East Friesland, where I still live today. Many of my photos are taken in my own garden or in the surroundings of my native East Friesland. Growing up in the country, I have always been close to animals and have taken a particular interest in our native bird life. I look after 70 nest boxes for Western Barn Owls, Common Kestrels, Common Starlings and Tits. I build them all myself. My first animal photos were taken in the early eighties with an instant camera; I used an analogue camera after that, before switching to digital in 2006.

Common Kingfisher | Martin Taburet
«I regularly take pictures of a kingfisher couple on the banks of the river Lot using a floating hide. It’s raining on this particular morning, but the Kingfisher is there, on one of its favourite perches, patiently waiting for the shower to pass.»
Martin Taburet,
Born in 1990 in the Département du Lot, I have always been fascinated by nature’s wild beauty. After graduating from high school with a focus on science, I trained in nature management and conservation in Carcassonne, which is where I took up photography for the first time…
Over the years, my passion for pictures grew, culminating in my decision to become a professional photographer in 2016. For me, taking a picture is a means of expression, so I always strive to preserve the authenticity and emotion of the moment.

Eurasian Wryneck | Thomas Hinsche
«I had tried countless times to capture this moment: every now and then, the Wryneck’s extremely long tongue shoots from its beak and catapults through the air in a swerving motion. The small woodpecker probably does this to clean its sticky tongue.»
Thomas Hinsche,
I grew up in a family of ornithologists, receiving guidance from my father and grandfather and learning at a young age to appreciate undisturbed natural habitats. I took up nature photography in 2006. Since then, I have been capturing my experience in pictures, developing my skills and my passion for nature photography while practicing patience, respect and care towards the animals. I see my images as a means to draw people’s attention to the beauty in their surroundings and arouse their curiosity.

Black-headed Gull | Dominic Eichhorn
«Winter in Basel; it’s bitterly cold, and everything is frozen over. What is there to photograph now? A Black-headed Gull on the ice! To the right of the bird was a streak of sunlight reflecting off the ice. I walked around until the Gull was right in the path of the light.»
Dominic Eichhorn,
I started taking an interest in ornithology five years ago, and subsequently joined the youth section of a local bird group (OGB Bebbi Babbler). Straight away, I wanted to capture the birds I was observing on camera. My first attempts were made using my parents’ digital camera. But I was soon ready to upgrade to interchangeable lenses and my own device. I saved money to buy a compact system camera, along with an adapter that I use to attach old Minolta lenses. That is how I learnt to master aperture and shutter speed.

Grey Heron | Herve Texier
«I took this picture from a floating hide in a nature reserve in the Département du Lot in France. The Grey Heron struck this pose while soaking up the first rays of sunlight.»
Herve Texier,
Great pictures have always fascinated me, so when digital photography came along, I jumped on the bandwagon. I gradually expanded my photo equipment and now focus on nature photography as a whole. Animals, macro images, plants and landscapes are the themes I pursue in my native Département du Lot. The area’s rich biodiversity allows me to indulge my passion all year round. I particularly enjoy animal photography because of the excitement of approaching and observing birds and mammals.

Award winning photographer and author, Markus Varesvuo is a professional wildlife photographer specialized in birds of Europe, especially his native north. Based in Helsinki, and part-time on a small island in the Finnish Archipelago, perfectly located along a bird migration route, Markus enjoys creating enticing pictures of birds, especially in winter conditions.

«A very foggy morning on the lake. I was using a floating hide, but it was hard to find the swans. However, the thick fog offered a nice, tranquil setting for these beautiful birds.»
Antti Siponen,
I am an enthusiastic wildlife photographer from Finland. I like to capture special light effects and moods of nature, and especially appreciate calm and foggy mornings. Mostly I photograph birds, but I am interested in all nature-related topics. My favourite places for photography are near water, so I have developed a preference for water birds, cranes and herons.
